Military history free on Ancestory.com until D-Day, this Wednesday, June 6
I just read in our local newspaper that www.ancestory.com will let you look up military records for free until this coming Wednesday, June 6 (D-Day anniversary). Isn't that neat? I went on there and found where some of my great uncles registered for the draft, and I found my Dad's enlistment notice and how he weighed 164 pounds the day he was drafted! LOL. He was drafted August 10 and he and Mother were married August 12! Do you think you will go on the website and use this free information?
What's your favorite historically based movie?
With 300 coming out this week, and me just seeing Zodiac last weekend, it got me thinking about historically based movies. By this I mean movies where the story is based around actual events in history. The whole thing may not be 100 percent fact, but the main plot is around a historical event(like JFK, Glory, or Apollo 13) I thnk my favorite is "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchet. I thought this was an amazing movie, and wished it got a little more recognition. I also really enjoyed "A Beautiful Mind". I found that movie was facinating. What is your favorite historically based movie?
Politics - Millitary
Politicians should keep there nose out of war and military operations. I've noticed and its 100% true, every single military adviser to the president and anyone will military training and Military History will tell you we are winning this war and will win. The people who are saying we cant win and that we are losing are politicians who know nothing about war, who have no idea what war is and cant even tell the difference between winning and losing. I'm tired of politicians getting in the way of are military they should stick to law making and law abiding and let the military do there job. We are winning the war and we are going to win so stop complaining you don't have military training or degree in Military History so keep you nose out of it and don't try and correct a man who's been to war and is a general and has been in the military for 20+ years come on general Patreius knew his stuff. Is all you beurocratic and democratic idiots who don't know anything. I'm sorry but your like the little kid who always gave his lunch money to bullies. So please if you don't know the difference in winning and losing IE...
Military Donations Favor Obama Over McCain
I must admit this even surprised me! Not so much that more have donated to Obama over McCain but that it's by a rate of SIX to ONE! http://caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com/Excerpt (from CNN's Jack Cafferty): When it comes to the money race, it appears Barack Obama is ahead on the battlefield. Members of the military are donating more money to Obama than to the military man John McCain. A lot more money.A nonpartisan organization called the “Center for Responsive Politics” reports U.S. troops serving abroad have given almost six times as much money to the Democrat Obama as they have to the Republican McCain. These are pretty shocking results when you consider that historically military donations favor the Republican. Also, McCain is a decorated war hero who spent almost 5 years as a POW in Vietnam. He graduated from the U-S Naval Academy and was a naval aviator for 22 years. His military experience is a big part of his candidacy. Obama has never served a day in the military. It might just mean that Obama’s message of being against the war in Iraq is resonating with the people who have been called on to fight it. Obama says he would pull out all combat troops from Iraq...
The Forgotten Soldier - german troop at eastern front
Hi folks and all bookworms here, i've just finished reading memoirs of a young german(half french) soldier Guy Sajer.Strangely enough, must admit, that no bad feelings all the way through the book.Humanity and honesty. On the shelfs is many books by or about germans, but mostly rather arrogant or super hero wannabes.Don't you think? Is there anybody with some interest in military history?Books or films.Which one hit you deep inside? Catch 22? Platoon? Tell us what is the best reading on this topic and we can share our opinion. Thanks for your time.
The Soldier's Soldier
This story is a little bit of Canadian military history, one the best Canadian generals of all time, Rick Hillier has retired.http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977390649Normally I do no pay much attention to military stuff, but I am proud of the Canadian involvement in Afghanistan, fighting the taliban,do you think the taliban will ever be defeated?do you think the war on terrorism will ever be?Did you even know about Canada's major contribution in Afghanistan?
Anyone else have a husband who is addicted to the same type of shows?
My husband is addicted to the same types of shows all the time. True crime like CSI and military history. That's all he ever watches. I'm so sick of hearing about murders and war 3 to 6 hours a day. I'm so glad when he turns off the TV to read a book.Guess what about? The Civil War, World War II, etc. You get the idea.
Tomb tourists have a new guide in France
Just in time for Halloween, a macabre guide book was released telling where dead celebrities are buried in France. The latest Guide to Celebrity Tombstones spends 322 pages mapping 7,000 tombs of personalities from literature, cinema, theater, science, religion, sports, politics and military history. "It's a little like my address book, but the addresses here are permanent," author Betrand Beyern said on France-Info radio. "The book answers two questions: where is such and such a person buried... and who is buried in my region, in my city or in the village where I like to spend my holidays." Napoleon Bonaparte's tomb at Les Invalides monument in Paris is one of the most visited, he said. Others are Le Pantheon that houses Victoe Hugo, Emile Zola and other luminaries, and The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that honors French war dead. Another popular site is the tomb of Jim Morrison, singer for The Doors, who died in 1971. Morrison is buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in eastern Paris. "In Paris, we often walk all over deceased celebrities without even realizing it," Beyern said. For example, the grave of French satirist Francois Rabelais, who died in 1553, is under a popular store...
